The Twins agreed on Tuesday to send Johan Santana to the Mets for four prospects -- center fielder Carlos Gomez, 22, and righthanded pitchers Philip Humber, 25, Kevin Mulvey, 22, and Deolis Guerra, 18. But the trade isn't yet final.
The Mets have a 72-hour window that closes at 4 p.m. Friday to work out a long-term deal with Santana that would prompt the pitcher to waive his no-trade clause. All five players also have to pass physical exams.
Santana will agree to a six-year deal for about $130 million.
There's flexibility in a payroll that will be around $50 million -- down from about $70 million last year -- to look at adding a veteran free-agent pitcher. But the free-agent market is bleak, meaning Scott Baker is the likely Opening Day starter.
