You'll remember back in 2008, a season that Michael Cuddyer would like to forget, that he was limited to 71 games -- first with a cut finger on his right hand and then with a strained tendon in his left index finger. Then, while he was rehabbing the second injury in Rochester, he broke a bone in his foot and was sidelined for five more weeks.
For an encore, Cuddyer's 2011 season was hindered at the start by the notorious wart on his right foot. After attempts to treat it himself over the winter failed, Cuddyer was among those who missed a chunk of spring training after a doctor removed it. There was some cause-and-effect drawn with Cuddyer and others between their spring training setbacks and the slow starts that morphed into the wretched season.
Last August, Cuddyer tried to soldier on after being hit on the right wrist by a pitch against Baltimore -- playing hurt wasn't exactly a signature of the 2011 Twins -- but eventually sat out for a week when it became apparent that the bruise was hampering his game.
Wednesday, this happened.
If you didn't go look, Cuddyer fouled a ball off his foot in the fifth inning against San Diego and had to leave the game. He didn't leave, though, until two innings after he hit a two-run homer two pitches after the painful foul ball.
"We drained it, and I'll probably end up losing the nail, but it's better," Cuddyer told mlb.com
He's vowing to be back in the lineup when the Rockies play Friday -- and we wish him good luck with the bruised big toe that he's currently sporting.
MLB.com's Thomas Harding reported that Rockies "manager Jim Tracy said if Cuddyer is still in pain Friday when the Rockies begin a three-game series in Milwaukee, the skipper could sit Cuddyer and allow him two days to rest."
