Tuesday night's 8-6 loss to the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field dropped the Twins to 6-21 in August. Minnesota's previous record for losses in August was 20, set in 1997, and there's still one more day to go this month.

After suffering their 10th shutout loss of the season Monday, the Twins blew two three-run leads Tuesday.

"We finally scored some runs, but defensively we didn't make enough plays again, and we gave it back to them," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "That's kind of what we've dealt with all year. Not making enough defensive plays."

Jason Kubel hit a three-run homer, Joe Mauer hit a two-run double, and Michael Cuddyer added an RBI single, helping the Twins build a 6-3 lead.

But the White Sox capitalized on a throwing error at first base by Cuddyer, scoring five runs as they sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth.

It was 6-4, with the bases loaded and one out when Alejandro De Aza hit a bouncer to Cuddyer, whose throw to second was low and wide. Tsuyoshi Nishioka didn't even reach for the ball as it zipped into left field, and two runs scored on the play.

"I was just trying to get an out," Cuddyer said. "I guess the throw wasn't good enough."

De Aza had hit a three-run homer in his previous at-bat, answering Kubel's shot, and this one tied it again. Gardenhire pulled starting pitcher Anthony Swarzak, but the bullpen couldn't stop the White Sox from adding two more runs.

Valencia sits

Gardenhire sat Danny Valencia, one day after expressing frustration over the third baseman's range.

"He's been playing every day, and as I said last night, he wasn't moving very well, so we'll put Luke [Hughes] over there tonight and give Danny a breather."

Valencia struck out as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning. Gardenhire indicated Valencia would return to third soon.

"It's a manager's job to notice when a guy looks a little tired," Gardenhire said. "He looked a little lethargic out there to me, let's put it that way."

Casilla has setback

Alexi Casilla felt more tightness in his right hamstring on Monday in the first game of a rehab assignment with Class A Fort Myers. He'll rest for a couple days and resume playing for Fort Myers if all goes well.

Etc.

• Mauer was the DH after missing six games because of a neck injury. Mauer said he still felt some stiffness, but he was hoping to catch Wednesday if everything responded well to Tuesday's game.

• Class AAA Rochester pitcher Jeff Manship had surgery to remove a bone chip from his right elbow.

• Denard Span (migraine symptoms) has been feeling better during his respite from all training activity and will return to Minnesota soon to begin working out at Target Field.

• The Twins had seven players from their organization chosen to compete in the Arizona Fall League: Scott Diamond, Aaron Hicks, Brian Dozier, Cole Devries, Chris Herrmann, Bret Jacobson and Bruce Pugh.
