Sunday Insider: Central Intelligence

Give the Indians credit. They have added Ubaldo Jimenez, Kosuke Fukudome and now Jim Thome in an attempt to make a run at the AL Central title.

But can they do it? They entered the weekend 6 1/2 games behind the Tigers heading into the final month of the season.

On Wednesday, Cleveland lost 9-2 to Seattle and fell below .500 for the first time since April 3. The Indians were once 15 games over .500.

Last weekend, Cleveland trailed the Tigers by just 1 1/2 games.

"I still feel we've got a good streak left in us," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "The last week we just didn't pitch very well, and that has been our strength the whole season."

Detroit's Austin Jackson has driven in a run from third with less than two outs in his past six opportunities.

In 39 games since the All-Star break, the Royals' Billy Butler has 10 homers and 35 RBI.

Chicago's Paul Konerko has been limited to DH duty lately after being hit in the knee with a pitch. That has forced Adam Dunn to play first base -- and remind everyone why he's a DH.
