CLEVELAND - Twins infielder Alexi Casilla was dressed and headed to the airport Saturday afternoon while his teammates were putting on their uniforms.
"It's frustrating,'' he said. "First game back from the DL.''
Casilla was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday after reinjuring his right hamstring Friday. To replace him on the roster, the Twins recalled infielder Trevor Plouffe from Class AAA Rochester. Plouffe had just been sent down Wednesday. Players sent to the minors must remain there for at least 10 days -- unless there's an injury.
Casilla was injured in the seventh inning Friday when he tried to leg out a bunt single down the third base line. The throw from third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall looked to be late, but Casilla was called out. Casilla said he was about three steps from the bag when his hamstring began to hurt.
He came to the park Saturday but couldn't play.
"Lexi came in and tried to run,'' Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He asked me to give him a day, and I did. He came to the park and could not run.''
Casilla is batting .260 with two homers, 21 RBI and 15 stolen bases.
After a horrible start, he's helped stabilize the infield and has held his own at the plate.
Plouffe is being called up for the third time this season. He's batting .313 with 15 homers and 33 RBI in 51 games at Rochester. With the Twins, he is batting .202 with five home runs in 38 games.
Matt Tolbert started at second and batted second in place of Casilla on Sunday.Cuddyer still out
While Michael Cuddyer's sore neck is better, it still hasn't improved enough for him to return to the starting lineup.
Cuddyer now might miss the entire Cleveland series.
"Still up in the air for [Sunday],'' Gardenhire said. "See how much it improves. I'm guessing Monday is a better shot.''
Cuddyer injured his neck Friday while taking a swing during the end of batting practice.
With Cuddyer out and Casilla on the DL, the Twins had only two healthy bench players Saturday in catcher Drew Butera and outfielder Ben Revere.
Butera took grounders at second base before the game, just in case he's needed in an emergency.Packed in together
The Green Bay Packers played the Cleveland Browns in an exhibition game Saturday, and the Packers stayed at the same hotel as the Twins. Gardenhire knows some members of the Packers coaching staff and chatted with them after Friday's game.
Revere is a good friend of rookie receiver Randall Cobb, and caught up with him Saturday morning.Nishioka's defense
Tsuyoshi Nishioka was back at shortstop Saturday, one day after his worst game in the field since joining the Twins.
He was charged with one error, when he mishandled Travis Hafner's grounder. Hafner doesn't run well, but Nishioka charged in like Hafner was a greyhound.
"Looked like he panicked,'' Gardenhire said.
Nishioka also botched two ground balls that could have become double plays.
"He felt terrible about it,'' Gardenhire said. "You could see it. He was very frustrated.''
