Twins outfielder Jason Kubel had to leave a minor league game Thursday when he tweaked his left foot, the same foot that landed him on the disabled list last month.

Kubel, playing right field for Class A Fort Myers while on a rehabilitation assignment, said he twisted while going back on a ball hit over his head during a game against Port St. Lucie.

"I knew I was going to have to play through a little pain," Kubel said in a phone interview, "but it was a little bit more than just a little. So I didn't want to keep going like that."

There are no plans to shut him down or undergo a MRI exam. He intends to take fly balls early Friday and, if all is well, play tonight.

"Just a little setback," Kubel said.

The tweak does alter his rehab plans. He was playing in the outfield in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday and was scheduled to be the designated hitter in the second game. After that, he was off to join Class AA New Britain for the weekend.

Now Kubel will spend the weekend playing games in Fort Myers. He indicated that, if all goes well this weekend, he could join Class AAA Rochester for a few games early next week, when the Red Wings are at home.

Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony was in attendance when Kubel left the game.

"He just got turned around and when he stepped on it, he felt it a little bit," Antony said.

Kubel, batting .310 with five homers and 30 RBI, hasn't played since May 30 and went on the 15-day disabled list June 2.

Etc.

• Righthander Kevin Slowey, recovering from an abdominal strain, started the first game and gave up two runs over 3 1/3 innings on three hits, including a home run. But he came out healthy and will fly to Rochester on Sunday.

• First baseman Justin Morneau had a fragment of a herniated disc removed from his neck Wednesday. The Twins will provide an update Friday.
