Stranger than fiction: The WMC staff has been appalled at the dearth of good journalism the past couple of days. One awful rumor had the Twins, Athletics and Mets working on a three-team deal that would send Johan Santana to the Mets and leave the Twins with Dan Haren. A's GM Billy Beane immediately shot down the rumor. It's an example of how reporters, under the gun to come up with news, are being a little too creative.
Fearless drafters: The Rule 5 draft is today at 9 a.m., and holy Josue Espada, Batman, the Twins aren't afraid to select a player with their 14th overall pick. Espada was the Twins' Rule 5 draft pick in 1998, by the way.
K.C., here I come? Now Carlos Silva has been rumored to be headed to Kansas City, although his agent said nothing is imminent. Still, if Silva gets paid $8-10 million annually, it's possible the Royals could outspend the Twins next season. Kansas City's payroll definitely will exceed $65 million. The Twins, if they trade Santana, will have a payroll around $55 million.
Odds and ends: Former Twin Jason Maxwell, a high school coach in the Nashville area, hung out at the hotel Tuesday. ... The Tigers likely will try to move third baseman Brandon Inge, who is expendable because of the addition of Miguel Cabrera ... The Cubs are interested in Baltimore INF Brian Roberts.
