The Twins issued 17 walks in two losses to Detroit this week, but the one that bothered manager Ron Gardenhire most came in Wednesday's eighth inning.
After Jason Kubel's three-run homer had given the Twins a 6-5 lead, Gardenhire inserted lefthander Jose Mijares, who fell behind in the count 2-0 and 3-1 before getting Scott Sizemore to fly out.
Mijares then walked the left-handed-hitting Brennan Boesch on a 3-2 pitch, so Gardenhire turned to closer Matt Capps for a five-out save. Glen Perkins and Joe Nathan already had pitched.
Pinch hitter Jhonny Peralta followed with a two-run homer, and the Tigers came up with two more runs off Capps in the ninth for a 9-7 victory.
"You've gotta have courage," Gardenhire said. "Courage is throwing the ball over the plate and making them swing the bat, and hopefully we'll catch it. Sometimes you back away and shy away and that's not good enough, especially at the end of the ballgame.
"[Mijares has to] go after that guy. ... It's not just Mijares; it's a lot of them. You walk eight guys in a game, that's not good enough."
Capps, who didn't walk anybody in 1 2/3 innings, was charged with a blown save and a loss.
"What Cappy did today, I take my hat off," pitching coach Rick Anderson said. "You bring a closer into the game in the eighth, that's what happens. But [Capps] doesn't back off; he'll attack you, [saying] 'Here you go,' and take his chances."Revere's ride
Ben Revere said he felt OK after colliding with Tigers catcher Alex Avila, when he scored the tying run in the eighth inning. Inserted as a pinch hitter, Revere reached on an infield single, then sped home from first base on Matt Tolbert's double when Boesch fumbled the ball in right.
"That's one of his tools," Gardenhire said of Revere's speed. "He can hit, and he was flying around the bases. Tough play there at home, but that says a little bit about him. He went in there hard and scored a big run."Young nearing return
The Twins are hoping to activate Delmon Young from the disabled list Friday. He was scheduled to play left field for six innings in an extended spring training game Wednesday. Young has been out since April 18 because of a strained left oblique muscle.Plouffe still iffy
When Young returns, the Twins will need to clear a roster spot, and Gardenhire would prefer not to place shortstop Trevor Plouffe on the DL. Plouffe hasn't played since Sunday because of a strained left hamstring, but his leg feels better and he is itching to play.
The Twins will see if Plouffe can run on the field Thursday. If he is ready, they can send an outfielder -- Revere or Rene Tosoni -- back to Class AAA Rochester.Etc.
• Francisco Liriano said he felt dizzy and had a hard time breathing during Tuesday night's 10-2 loss to the Tigers, but he doesn't think he will have a problem making his next scheduled start, Monday at Seattle.
• Pitching matchups for the weekend series with Toronto: Carl Pavano vs. Ricky Romero, Nick Blackburn vs. Jo Jo Reyes and Brian Duensing vs. Brandon Morrow.
• Tigers manager Jim Leyland on the 12-23 Twins: "It's pretty simple: When your horses are at the vet, that's not good. When they're on the track, that's good. Their horses will be on the track here shortly."
