Sunday Insider: Central Intelligence

After losing two games to the Twins last week, the White Sox could be facing some decisions about manager Ozzie Guillen and his coaching staff.

Several players aren't hitting, and there have been breakdowns on the bases and in the field. Now the White Sox are on a three-city, nine-game road trip to the West Coast. If things don't go well, there are some rumblings that Guillen and/or members of his coaching staff could be in trouble.

"Of course, we're not playing up to the abilities we have," Guillen said. "But we shouldn't make excuses. Any excuses about schedules, weather or whatever, we have to play better baseball. There is no reason for us to be playing the way we are right now."

Terrible setback for Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya, who broke his elbow June 28 pitching at Target Field. Zumaya now will have surgery on the elbow and probably will miss the entire season. He tried to rejoin the team in spring training but had setbacks, and then another rehabilitation program failed.
