Continued: Ryan says he wouldn't force a deal

"If Castillo was not going to be here next year, [Casilla] probably was going to be our second baseman," Gardenhire said. "So why not take a look at him now and see how he does?"

The switch-hitting Casilla, 23, batted .269 with three homers, 20 RBI and 24 stolen bases in 84 games at Class AAA Rochester. Gardenhire said Casilla still makes youthful mistakes but has improved since his callup in April.

Casilla and Nick Punto will share time at second base, and Gardenhire said he will use Casilla in the leadoff spot occasionally.

Etc.

• Twins outfielder Michael Cuddyer was examined by a team doctor Tuesday and was given the final go-ahead to resume all baseball-related activities. He will activated from the 15-day disabled list Friday, barring a setback.
