Twins discuss trading options

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire met with General Manager Terry Ryan before Wednesday's game to discuss how to improve the team as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches.

"I don't want any surprises as we go forward," Ryan said. "I want to make sure everyone is on the same page."

The meeting provided some hope to Twins fans that Ryan is willing to make a deal to help the club overcome a seven-game deficit in the AL Central Division.

After Gardenhire last week hinted the club could be interested in dealing for quality starting pitching, Ryan said Wednesday that he's looking more for hitting help.

"You can never go wrong with pitching," Ryan said. "I think in our circumstance here, the offensive side of the game would probably be our first priority."

Starting pitching, as usual, is coveted on the trade market. That appears to favor the Twins. Ryan can't offer experienced arms but he does have a few young, inexpensive starters he could deal and fill offensive needs at designated hitter, third base or left field, although he prefers to hold onto pitching.

Teams seem to be waiting to the prices to fall before they start shopping.

Meanwhile, Twins outfielder Torii Hunter, during an interview on KFAN radio Wednesday, said Washington's Dmitri Young was a hitter who could help the team.

"Dmitri is definitely the guy," Hunter told the station. "If not Dmitri, Ty Wigginton, Kevin Mench. But Dmitri is a guy who's been an All-Star; he's hit .300 almost every year."

Perkins comes home

Lefthander Glen Perkins, who has missed 50 games because of a strained muscle near his shoulder, will be examined today by Twins physician Dan Buss.

Perkins seemed to be coming along fine in his recovery but felt pain in the area last week while pitching for Class A Fort Myers during a rehabilitation start.

"I'm going to get him diagnosed," Ryan said. "It is tough for me to gauge what his future is until I see him."

Raburn and Kubel

Ryan Raburn, who started in center field for Detroit on Wednesday, has an unfortunate place in Twins history. It was Raburn who collided with Twins outfielder Jason Kubel during Arizona Fall League play in 2004 that led to Kubel tearing three ligaments in his left knee and missing all of the 2005 season.

Raburn, Kubel, Jesse Crain, Scott Baker, Jason Bartlett and Detroit's Curtis Granderson all played on the same AFL team in 2004.

Etc.

• Hunter, who turned 32 Wednesday, was asked what he received for gifts. "I got a kiss, a card and a hug from my son," he said. "Nothing special."

Rondell White is scheduled to play for the Twins' rookie league team Saturday. He had to be moved back to the disabled list because his 20-day rehab period ended and he had to wait five days before he could play again. He's recovering from a sore left hamstring suffered during his rehab stint.

• Including Tuesday's 1-0 loss, the Twins have been shut out by Detroit 37 times.
