Continued: Ryan protective of pitching depth

Etc.

• Cincinnati claimed lefthander Alexander Smit off waivers. Smit was 1-4 with a 5.86 ERA for Class A Fort Myers in 50 2/3 innings.

Ryan said the move was totally performance-based, as the club wanted to give Smit a wake-up call but were prepared to lose him if a team claimed him.

• Outfielder Rondell White, slowed because of a sore left hamstring during his rehabilitation stint in Florida, didn't play Thursday for the Twins' Gulf Coast League team. He could play by the weekend.

• The Twins signed second-round pick Danny (Bam-Bam) Rams, a high school catcher from Miami, and 36th-round pick Dominique Rodgers, a righthander from Kent State.
