Errant bat catches Redmond, opens gash that needs stitches

CHICAGO - Twins catcher Mike Redmond left Friday's game in the first inning after he was hit in the head during Jim Thome's follow-through.

Thome, who had his bat slip completely out of this hands earlier in the at-bat, fouled off a 1-2 pitch from Matt Garza and lost control of his bat again. The bat whipped around and struck Redmond in the head, causing him to crumble to the ground.

Redmond remained alert, but a cut on the back of his head began bleeding. He was down for a few moments before leaving the game. He received seven stitches at U.S. Cellular Field and is listed as day to day. He said he expected to have a headache but was hoping to be available to play today.

Thome's bat also caught plate umpire Randy Marsh in the wrist. He remained in the game.

It forced the Twins to move Joe Mauer from designated hitter to catcher, forcing Garza to bat in the eighth spot in the order.

Off day

Righthander Scott Baker on Friday wasn't as close to being as sharp as he was on Sunday when he held Detroit to one run and three hits over eight innings.

The White Sox scored seven runs on five hits off Baker on Friday, including a two-run homer by Paul Konerko in the fifth.

"He really didn't have much," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He didn't locate. He didn't have a breaking ball."

Baker lost his mechanics and tried to make adjustments but never got in sync.

"I was thankful they gave me the opportunity to get through five," Baker said.

Baker just happened to pitch poorly on a day in which the Twins established a season high for runs scored.

Castillo back, but

Second baseman Luis Castillo, who sat out the last two games of the series with the Yankees because of sore legs and hip, returned to the starting lineup Friday.

But it was obvious as he hobbled through the clubhouse afterward that he's still far from 100 percent.

Castillo went 3-for-4 with four runs scored in Friday's Game 1. He started the second game and beat out an infield hit in the second.

Hunter to be fined

Indications are that Twins outfielder Torii Hunter will be fined but not suspended for his outburst on Tuesday in New York.

Twenty runs in Game 1 qualified as a barrage, but it was hardly a breeze. Then the Twins kept pounding, and a Game 2 shutout made it two out of two.
