After taking high schoolers on Thursday, the Twins loaded up on college pitchers during the second day of the Major League Baseball draft.
The Twins selected Michael McCardell, a righthander, from Division II Kutztown, in the sixth round. McCardell hits 92-94 miles per hour on the radar gun and has a strong frame.
The Twins followed that by selecting 6-7 righthander Danny Berlind, from Los Angeles Pierce College.
Seven of the following nine picks were pitchers.
"We assumed there would be a bunch of college guys through that area of the draft," Twins scouting director Mike Radcliff said. "It wasn't a great draft, and it showed up by the time you got into the sixth, seventh and eighth rounds."
The Twins also selected three local players on the second day.
St. Olaf outfielder Andrew Schmiesing went in the 11th round, followed by righthander Seth Rosin of Mounds View in the 28th round and catcher Mike Kvasnicka of Lakeville North in the 31st. Rosin and Kvasnicka have signed with the Gophers.
Radcliff said he hopes to sign 16 or 17 of the 50 players they selected during the two-day draft.
They will watch several play in summer leagues before deciding to sign right before the Aug. 15 deadline.
