Tiger trends

1. IMPROVED BULLPEN

With Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney injured, this was supposed to be the weak link. But Tigers relievers tossed 161/3 consecutive scoreless innings before Sunday.

2. GETTING HEALTHIER

Kenny Rogers is back. Zumaya and Rodney are healing. But Placido Polanco has a nagging back injury and has played just one game since the All-Star break.

3. MONROE BENCHED

Because Craig Monroe is batting .220 with a .269 on-base percentage, Marcus Thames has started three of four games in left field.

4. SHEFFIELD SMOKING

Gary Sheffield touched off another controversy, saying the Yankees treat black players differently from white players, but he only gets hotter at the plate. He's batting .462 in July with a 1.388 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.
