Ortiz starts well enough, then Phillies hitters deliver a big jolt

CLEARWATER, FLA. - Twins manager Ron Gardenhire summed up a 10-2 loss to the Phillies nicely:

"We hit the ball early, and then not much after that," he said. "The game kind of got out of whack, and we just kind of cruised through it."

Even teams that pride themselves on hustle tend to deflate when facing a big deficit. And after Rondell White and Luis Castillo gave the Twins a 2-0 lead with home runs, Ramon Ortiz and Pat Neshek combined to allow eight runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Neshek, working on his changeup against lefthanders, allowed three runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning. "It's good for him to face those guys," Gardenhire said of lefthanded hitters. "But he couldn't keep the ball down."

Ortiz allowed just one of the first nine batters he faced to reach but then gave up three homers in four-plus innings on a windy day in Clearwater.
