White, who has agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract to return to the Twins in 2007, is slated to be the starting left fielder and intends to come to camp 10 pounds lighter and prove he can be an every-day outfielder.
Rondell White had just finished working out Wednesday when reached by telephone. He was busy getting into outfielder's shape.
White, who has agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract to return to the Twins in 2007, is slated to be the starting left fielder and intends to come to camp 10 pounds lighter and prove he can be an every-day outfielder.
"I'm on the Torii Hunter program," said White, 34. "I'm eating right and watching myself."
White's deal, which the Twins announced on Wednesday, includes a vesting option for 2008 that kicks in at $3.5 million if he reaches 525 plate appearances and escalates to $3.75 million at 550 plate appearances and $4 million with 600 plate appearances. If he misses the vesting option, the Twins will pay him a $250,000 buyout.
White, signed as a designated hitter last season, made 355 plate appearances in a season in which he was slowed by a stiff shoulder early and a pulled hamstring late. He batted .246 with seven homers and 38 RBI but hit .321 after the All-Star break and .328 when he played the outfield.
"I don't think last year was Rondell's true ability by any stretch," Twins General Manager Terry Ryan said.
White might get days off or DH in day games after night games, as the Twins have Jason Kubel, Lew Ford and Jason Tyner available to play in left. Kubel, coming off of right knee surgery, is expected to DH most of the time.
Ryan said the only problem with White's defense is his throwing.
"His routes are fine," Ryan said. "His ability to catch the ball is fine. Playing in the Dome is fine. We can send the cutoff guys out farther."
Notes
The Twins continue to negotiate with righthander Sidney Ponson. Ponson was 4-5 with a 6.25 ERA with the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals last season.
The Twins will release their list of spring training invites today. Watch for righthander Kevin Slowey, who is 11-7 with a 1.96 ERA over two minor league seasons.
