FOOTBALL: Rogers gets dramatic win

CLASS 4A SECTION 5 FINAL

• ROGERS 28, ST. MICHAEL-ALBERTVILLE 21: Royals junior linebacker Alex Meixell stripped the ball from a Knights runner at the 6-yard line and carried two defenders with him across the goal line with 15 seconds remaining, giving Rogers (9-1) its first state tournament berth Saturday at St. Cloud State University. Two players earlier, St. Michael-Albertville (8-3) intercepted a Royals pass. Rogers junior quarterback Bjorn Bloom threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver David Huntley earlier in the fourth quarter to tie it at 21. Bloom opened the scoring with a 1-yard run. The Royals also scored on junior Derek Vidor's 89-yard kickoff return. St. Michael-Albertville's Joe Carpenter caught 63- and 98-yard touchdown passes from Tanner Krutzig.

CLASS 5A SECTION 8 FINAL

• BRAINERD 33, BUFFALO 20: The Warriors know how to take control quickly. Brainerd (7-3) scored 26 points in the first quarter and cruised past the top-seeded Bison (8-2). Senior quarterback Reid Mimmack ran for two touchdowns and threw one for the second-seeded Warriors. He scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards and tossed a 23-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Kyle Crocker. Junior running back Jordan Hayes rushed for 123 yards and one score for Brainerd, and Crocker also scored on a 76-yard run. Buffalo, which trailed 33-8 at halftime, got on the scoreboard in the first half when junior Dillon Miller returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown following the Warriors' second touchdown. The Bison scored their final two touchdowns in the last six minutes of the game.

VOLLEYBALL: Redhawks headed to state

CLASS 2A SECTION 4 FINAL

• MINNEHAHA ACADEMY 3, ST. PAUL CENTRAL 0: The Redhawks earned their first trip to the state tournament, sweeping the Minutemen 25-12, 25-17, 25-18. St. Paul Central also was seeking its first section championship.
