Apple Valley completed an unbeaten, untied season in dominant fashion, bringing the school its eighth title.
Apple Valley midfielder Kyle Webb was just following the game plan when he launched a shot on Wayzata's goal from about 35 yards away.
"We were talking at halftime about how the goalie played out farther than he should," Webb said. "I saw him off his line and shot."
And he scored. Webb's goal was more than just pretty. It gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead in the 71st minute of Thursday's Class 2A state championship. Apple Valley ultimately won 4-0, bringing the program its eighth state title and redemption for last season's upset loss in the quarterfinals.
The Eagles finished 24-0 for what coach Chuck Scanlon believes to be the first unbeaten and untied season in state history. It required an 80-minute effort.
"This game we picked it up," Webb said. "Everyone knew that we wanted to get this one, especially since we didn't get it last year."
Last season, Apple Valley took the No. 1 seed into the state quarterfinals and got upset by St. Louis Park. Scanlon came into Thursday's game especially wary of Wayzata, which had knocked off No. 3 seed Bloomington Jefferson and No. 2 seed Woodbury.
No. 1 Apple Valley carried play most of the game. It took a 1-0 lead in the first half, outshooting the Trojans 11-5.
Tom Obarski scored the first of his two goals in the 50th minute. Ahead 2-0 without a goal from either Mr. Soccer Bijan Jabari or Metro Player of the Year David Rosenthal, the Eagles got an important tally from the less-heralded Webb.
"That goal really brought us up," Obarski said.
"That was a sweet goal," Scanlon said. "That kind of put the nail in the coffin."
