With Mike Golis catching his first three touchdown passes of the season, the Cougars finished on top of the Northwest Suburban.
Centennial wide receiver Mike Golis had not caught a touchdown pass before Tuesday. But it turned out to be a good night for firsts.
He caught three touchdown passes, pacing a 41-7 home victory against Coon Rapids that provided the Cougars a share of their first- ever Northwest Suburban Conference championship.
"I thought scoring one was great but I'll take three if they make me," Golis said. "It felt good to play well in a big game."
Centennial (7-1), which joined the Northwest Suburban in 2004, had lost to Coon Rapids in the teams' past three meetings.
The Cougars seemed headed for a first-quarter deficit Tuesday before their defense stiffened and turned the Cardinals away on three plays from inside the 10-yard line.
"That set the tone for the whole game," said Golis, a senior. "Our motto as a team this season was to lay it on the line in 2009."
Then the Centennial punt coverage unit made a big play. Coon Rapids (2-6) faked a punt, but the pass attempt wound up right in the chest of the Cougars' Jared Brunn.
The interception set up the offense near midfield.
Throwing to his left, senior quarterback Chris Anderson hit Brian Sarvela for a 32-yard gain on first down. One play later, Anderson threw to the right, connecting with Golis for a 16-yard touchdown.
Coon Rapids' only score came after a blocked punt gave the Cardinals the ball on the Centennial 31. One play later, quarterback Brandon Flippen passed to Malcolm Farley for a touchdown.
Anderson and Golis teamed up for a second touchdown that restored the lead, this one from 24 yards out only 25 seconds before halftime.
Golis, running back Adam LaMere and Anderson added scores in the third quarter, putting the game out of reach.
