MOLLY MASON

Minnetonka, swimming

When she woke up Saturday morning, Molly Mason knew it was gong to be a good day. A historic day, in fact.

By the time the day was done, Mason’s Skippers had accomplished something they had not done since 1978 -- beat Edina in a section meet with a state tournament berth on the line.

Minnetonka won the Section 6, 2A meet with a team score of 476.5, beating runner-up Edina by five team points.

“It’s amazing,” Mason said. “Knowing that all of our hard work has paid off and we made  history. Beating Edina makes it a little sweeter. 1978 Is a long time ago.”

Mason was the most successful swimmer of the meet for Minnetonka. She won the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle races and swam the anchor leg on the 200 freestyle relay.

She was also the anchor on the 400 freestyle relay, the last race of the day. Minnetonka trailed Edina by one point entering the race and needed a victory to win the meet.

The Skippers won going away, giving Minnetonka the section title

“We all had great swims in the race,” Mason said. “We were pretty far ahead. I just had to finish it up.”
