Athletes of the Week

Last update: October 21, 2009 - 2:30 PM

KIERA JANZEN

Cretin-Drham Hall, swimming

Janzen isn’t one to back down from strong competition.

She thrives on it. The Class 2A defending state champion in two events (200- and 500-yard freestyle) successfully defended both titles Saturday night in the girls’ state swimming & diving meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. She is the state record holder in both events.

“I’m really grateful to be the state champion again,” Janzen said.

The junior won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.51 and 500 freestyle in 4:50.73. In both events, Janzen beat senior Kaela Anderson of Stillwater. Anderson competed in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly a year ago. “I like having a strong swimmer next to me,” Janzen said. She beat teammate Lauren Weis in both events last year.

“It really pushes me.” Janzen established the state record in both events in 2008. Her record marks are 1:47.86 in the 200 freestyle and 4:50.55 in the 500 freestyle. “I was hoping to beat my best times,” Janzen said. “I did my best, but fell a little short.”

That wasn’t the case in another goal, to successfully defend her state titles.

ETHAN BRENNA

Cooper, adapted soccer

Brenna was the winning goalkeeper in leading the Robbinsdale/Hopkins/Mound-Westonka adapted soccer team to it’s second straight state championship. He made 63 saves in the tournament, 23 of them in a shootout victory over Anoka-Hennepin in the finals.

AUDREY KUMM

Hutchinson, swimming

The junior led the Tigers to a second-place finish in the Class 1A state meet, having a hand in on three first-place finishes. Kumm won the 100 butterfly and was a member of Hutchinson’s winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay squads. The 400 freestyle relay team registered a state record time of 3:32.14.

CAMERON CLARKSON

Cretin-Derham hall, football

He didn’t score a touchdown and barely played in the second half of a 45-19 victory over Brainerd in the Class 5A semifinals, but the brute force of the 270-pound fullback was the catalyst for the Raiders’ victory, rushing for 123 of his 135 yards in the first half.

MEGHAN LORENCE

Irondale, hockey

The Knights burst out of the gates with three convincing victories last week. Lorence, a junior forward, was the offensive fulcrum, scoring seven goals and adding six assists and becoming the leading scorer in team history with 225 points.
