SOPHIE REDDING

Henry Sibley • gymnastics

A lesson learned last year paved the way for a senior year to remember.

As a sophomore, Redding took first place in the vault competition at the Class 2A state meet. She carried the weight of that victory through her junior season, feeling the pressure that goes with being a state champion.

"I went into my junior year with a lot of expectations to do well, and I let it bring me down a bit," she said. "This year, I have a different mind-set."

No looking ahead. Focus on the moment. And, above all, have fun.

That attitude adjustment has led to some pretty impressive performances this season. In the Henry Sibley Invitational on Saturday, Redding posted season-high scores in the vault (9.85), the balance beam (9.65) and the all-around (38.7). Her vault and her all-around scores are the best in the state this season.

"I'm trying not to look at the bigger picture. I'm just taking every skill one at a time," she said. "I'm trying not to be nervous and mostly have fun."

And is she having fun?

"That 38.7 is the highest [all-around] score I've ever gotten in my high school career,'' she said. "It's a pretty good feeling."
