After throwing 13 innings and 201 pitches, Warroad pitcher Lars Anderson had enough Saturday night.
With the Warriors' Class 2A, Section 8 baseball playoff game against Thief River Falls tied 3-3 and a runner on second, Anderson slammed the book shut with one swing, improbably ending the most memorable game of his career with a walk-off home run.
"I thought I had to get a hit at least," Anderson said. "I didn't want the game to go on anymore. We had to do it right there."
If not for a Minnesota rule that high school pitchers cannot throw more than 14 innings over three days, the game might have gone much longer. Cody Conners, who pitched three innings in the opening round, was only able to go 11 innings for the Prowlers, striking out 21 batters. He threw 204 pitches before being replaced in the 12th.
Anderson -- who had pitched one inning in a previous game and wouldn't have been able to come back out to pitch the 14th -- finished with 18 strikeouts, six hits allowed and one monster home run.
"I talked to him every inning and his arm was fine," Warroad coach Scott Knutson said. "In a regular-season game, you'd never let your pitcher throw 13 innings, obviously. But the loser [of Saturday's game] goes home, so he just kept on throwing."
Warroad continues the section tournament today against Detroit Lakes. Anderson will not be available. One more victory and the Warriors move on, however. So how about Thursday, Lars?
"I'll be ready to go," he said. "But it will be tough to top that one."
