Casey Dehn came into Thursday's Class 2A, Section 1 track meet with a state record on his mind. In a field that included four of the state's five best shot putters this season, the Owatonna senior settled for a first-place finish, a trip to next week's state meet and another chance to break the record.
Dehn, the defending state champ in the shot put and discus, won Thursday's shot put competition with a toss of 62 feet, 6 inches at Lakeville South. His personal best, which came at the same site earlier this season, is 64-11¾; the state record is 65-6.
"The whole goal for the last couple weeks has been trying to get the state record," he said. "But I've been changing my technique a little and it hasn't been working so well lately. Hopefully I can get it straightened out before state."
The top two finishers in each section go to state, as well as anyone else who beats the state qualifying standard of 54-4. Four shot putters from Section 1 will compete at state one week from today. Owatonna senior Sean Wallace placed second at 58 feet, ¾ inch; Red Wing sophomore Luke Johnson was third at 54-7; and Farmington junior Logan Hussung was fourth at 54-6. A third Owatonna thrower, sophomore Jake Fenske, was fifth at 53-1.
Coming into the section meets, Dehn, Wallace, Johnson and Hussung ranked first, second, third and fifth in the state.
