Sept. 23: The Trojans can take a step toward locking down the league title with a victory over the Hornets.

Wayzata coach Tony Peszneker notched his 450th career victory Sept. 9 with a 3-1 win over Cretin-Derham Hall, and he could add another state title this year, thanks to arguably one of the most talented squads he’s had in 28 years.

Wayzata is 8-0-1 to start the season, thanks in part to a breakout season from Marissa Kalkar. The senior has a team-high 15 goals this season, including five goals and two assists in victories over Eden Prairie and Minnetonka last week.

The Trojans, ranked No. 1 in the Minnesota High School Soccer Coaches Association's Class 2A rankings from Sept. 18, have surrendered just one goal this season. About the only adversity they faced came in a 0-0 draw against Edina on Sept. 5.

Edina has strengthened its defense since giving up three goals in a 3-1 loss to Burnsville on Aug. 26. No opponent has scored against the fourth-ranked Hornets (6-1-1, 2-0-1) since.

Edina will find out if it’s got enough to topple Wayzata, the reigning three-time Lake Conference champion, in our Top Game of the Week.
