Alipate brothers carry Jaguars past Hornets

CLASS 4A

• SECTION 2 SEMIFINALS: Edina's magical season came to an end Saturday night. Bloomington Jefferson raced to a quick 20-point lead and held on to eliminate the Class 4A, No. 8 Hornets 74-65 at the Hopkins Lindbergh Center. The Jaguars scored 34 of the first 48 points to take a 20-point lead. Brothers Moses and Marcis Alipate each had 16 points for the Jaguars (18-7), who had four players in double figures. Senior guard Ben Biewen led the Hornets (22-6) with 18 points. Edina, which beat the Jaguars by three points earlier this season, lost four of its final six games ... Ninth-ranked Eden Prairie went 35-for-40 from the free-throw line in beating Chaska 86-73. Brett Ervin (28 points) and Ethan Wragge (25 points) combined for 53 points for the Eagles (22-6).

CLASS 3A

• SECTION 5 SEMIFINALS: Monticello became the first No. 1 seed in Class 3A to fall victim to an upset. Rogers (17-11) scored 42 points in the second half and built a 16-point lead at one point and then held off the Magic for a 63-56 victory at St. Cloud State. Royals senior guard Ryan Heyer had a game-high 28 points and went 9-for-12 from the free-throw line. Tommy Sawatzke had 19 points to lead three Monticello players in double figures. ... St. Michael-Albertville (19-9) built a 10-point lead at halftime and maintained it throughout the second half to defeat Annandale 68-57. Senior guard Kevin Nelson had a double-double (29 points and 10 rebounds) to pace the Knights. Junior guard Jack Mooney had 13 points and nine assists. Senior forward Caleb Mol has 18 points for Annandale.

• SECTION 1 SEMIFINALS: The top two seeds are in the championship, right where they are expected to be. Top-seeded New Prague beat Red Wing 49-40, and No. 2 St. Thomas Academy eliminated Austin 57-44 at the Rochester Civic Arena. Junior guard Danny Geiger scored 17 points, leading the Trojans (20-8) past Red Wing. ... In the other semifinal, the Cadets held Austin to 17 first-half points en route to the victory. Junior guard Billy Chapman scored 27 points for St. Thomas Academy (18-9).

CLASS 2A

• SECTION 4 QUARTERFINALS: St. Bernard's limited Concordia Academy to eight first-half points en route to an easy 71-33 victory. Senior guard Trant Davis had 19 points for the Bulldogs (24-3). ... Senior center T.J. Oakes scored 40 points, leading Jordan past Breck 80-70. The Hubmen (21-7) built a 43-23 lead at halftime. ... Junior center Mitch Mandel scored 19 points to power Holy Family (15-14) past Minneapolis Edison 88-52.

• SECTION 5 QUARTERFINALS: Marshall Bjorklund scored 22 points as Sibley East pulled away from Watertown-Mayer in the second half for a 74-58 victory. Sibley East held a four-point at halftime before outscoring the Royals 42-30 in the second half. ... Senior guard Nash Faulk scored 16 points to pace Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted (21-7) over Foley 54-49. The Lakers held a 25-23 advantage at halftime.
