Last year, the Rosemount boys’ varsity basketball team strolled into Lakeville North territory and knocked off a then-No. 6-4A Panthers team, ending Lakeville North’s nine-game win streak.

It was an off game for the Panthers, who would make it to the state championship game, eventually losing to Hopkins, and a strong showing by an Irish team that finished 6-19.

This year, however, Lakeville North, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A by Minnesota Basketball News, made virtually no mistakes and cruised to an 81-41 win over Rosemount (6-3, 1-1), with senior forward Nathan Reuvers leading all scorers with 27 points.

In this South Suburban Conference showdown, it was all Panthers from tip-off to final buzzer. Rosemount struggled with turnovers and running its offense without senior guard Myka Edmond, relying instead on the Alec and Luke Loehr tandem – twin brothers who combined for 28 of Rosemount’s 41 points.

Reuvers, a 6-foot-10 University of Wisconsin commit, was honored by Lakeville North before the game for scoring his 1,000th career point during a Dec. 29 win over Robbinsdale Armstrong. He came into the game averaging 27.1 points per game, the seventh-most in the state.

“He’s super good,” Lakeville North coach John Oxton said of Reuvers. “The biggest thing about Nathan is that he does so many things for us. You know, offense, defense, blocked shots, rebounds, he’s just a really, really good player. We’re really pleased with his leadership and how much he’s improved since last year."

Looking forward, Oxton said his Lakeville North squad hopes to continue building on what its accomplished so far this season, while crediting his players for their constant improvement.

“We’re trying to build a little more depth and get some kids a little more comfortable..we feel good about where we’re at.”

The Panthers will continue conference play on Tuesday when they head to Prior Lake.
