Four of the 15 candidates for Mr. Basketball award are from Hopkins.
Four of the 15 senior candidates for this season's Mr. Basketball award are from Hopkins, which is top ranked in Class 4A and No. 6 in this week's prepnation.com national rankings. The Hopkins players are Royce White, Mike Broghammer, Trent Lockett and Raymond Cowles. Two Henry Sibley players are included: Mike Bruesewitz and Chris Halvorsen.
The other candidates are Josh Figini of Chisago Lakes; Rodney Williams of Cooper; Sam Dower of Osseo; Tydan Storrusten of Pelican Rapids; Mike Felt of Redwood Valley; Mike Muscala of Roseville; Jordair Jett of St. Bernard's; Nate Wolters of St. Cloud Tech; and Marc Sonnen of Tartan.
• After playing host to Wayzata tonight, Hopkins will travel to Fordham University in New York, where the Royals will face Thomas Jefferson High School of Brooklyn in the Nike Super 6 Shootout. The other four teams playing in the event are from New York and New Jersey. Nike pays the teams' travel expenses.
Milestones• Apple Valley wrestling coach Jim Jackson needs one win to reach the 500-victory career mark. Jackson will take a record of 499-25-3 into tonight's Lake Conference dual against visiting Lakeville South. Apple Valley never has lost to a Lake Conference opponent in Jackson's 14 years as head coach, going 120-0. Apple Valley has a record of 33-0 this season and has gone to the state tournament every year under Jackson, winning 10 team championships.
• The Duluth East boys' hockey team, which is 17-3-1 and No. 6 in the Class 2A rankings, is in the midst of its 56th consecutive winning season. The closest the Greyhounds have come to a losing record in that time was 1958-59, when the team finished 13-12-2.
• Concordia Academy of Roseville senior Zach Towle needs seven three-pointers to tie the state's career record. Towle, who is averaging 25 points and 6.4 assists per game, has made 353 threes. The record is 360, set by Ellsworth's Aaron Van Der Stoep in 2007.
Hockey conference formsA new boys' hockey alliance will exist next year: the Two Rivers Conference. It consists of teams without a current conference affiliation: Meadow Creek Christian, Minneapolis East, Minneapolis West, Moose Lake-Willow River, Mora, North Branch, Pine City and Webster (Wis.).
The athletic directors of the schools involved approved the formation of the conference by vote Monday morning. Teams will begin play in the conference next season.
Girls' hockey awards listThe Let's Play Hockey publication has announced the 10 candidates for the Ms. Hockey Award and 10 candidates for the Senior Goalie award.
The Ms. Hockey candidates are Lisa Berreman, Eagan, defense; Margaret Chute, Blake, forward; Callie Dahl, Stillwater, forward; Sally Komarek, Blake, forward; Becky Kortum, Hopkins, forward; Mary Loken, Roseau, forward; Erika Magnusson, Fergus Falls, forward; Alex Nelson, Andover, forward; Kelsey Romatoski, Holy Angels, defense, and Lauren Zrust, Blaine, forward.
The Senior Goalie candidates are Laura Bellamy, Duluth Northern Stars; Kaye Collier, Hibbing/Chisholm; Chelsey Froseth, Roseau; Cara Gulbronson, Edina; Jessica Havel, Grand Rapids/Greenway; Zinka Krivdic, Armstrong; Kayla Lange, Anoka; Liz Maidl, Rochester Century; Jessica Newstrom, Cambridge-Isanti/Mora/Pine City; and Alexi Warnecke, Silver Bay/Cook County/Two Harbors.
White on a rollSt. Paul Arlington guard Deondre White has established himself as one of the premier scorers in the metro area. He showed why in a four-game stretch last week in which he scored 113 points, including a career-high 36 points in a 73-57 victory over Roseville. White is sixth in the metro in scoring with a 24.6 point average.
"He's really come into his own this year," Arlington coach Troy Russell said.
Tonight's best betBloomington Jefferson (21-0) at Eden Prairie (18-3) in boys' hockey. Eden Prairie's three losses are by one goal each: twice to Edina, once to Jefferson. The Jaguars put their undefeated season on the line at 7:30 tonight at the Eden Prairie Community Center.
