BOYS' BASKETBALL

Sims leads Spartans to title

• SIMLEY TOURNAMENT: Thomas Sims proved why he is the go-to player for Simley. The senior guard buried a three-pointer with 2.3 seconds remaining, giving the host Spartans a 66-64 victory over St. Michael-Albertville in the championship on Tuesday night. Sims finished with a game-high 25 points. Teammates Muresuk Mena and Tyler Nelson each added 15 points. Drew Nelson led St. Michael-Albertville with 23 points.

• ANOKA TOURNAMENT: Wayzata senior guard Jarrod Peterson put on a shooting clinic. Peterson made eight three-pointers in the first half en route to a 36-point performance, leading the Trojans past St. Paul Como Park 109-98 on the second day of the round-robin event. Senior forward Nolan Odland added 29 points for the Trojans. ... Class 4A, No. 1 Hopkins once again had five players in double figures, rolling to a 90-71 victory over Champlin Park. Arizona State recruit Trent Lockett paced the balanced attack with 17 points. The Royals scored 53 points in the first half.

• CATHOLIC SPIRIT TOURNAMENT: Guards Jordair Jett (23 points) and Averey Duncan (21 points) combined for 44 points, leading Class 2A, No. 1 St. Bernard's to a 62-52 victory over Armstrong in the semifinals. ... Senior guard Tyler Bredow made a basket at the buzzer, giving Holy Angels a 52-50 victory over St. Thomas (Texas) in the consolation semifinals.

• HASTINGS TOURNAMENT: In the semifinals, St. Thomas Academy avoided a scare from Farmington thanks to the late heroics of senior guard Mike Fitzgerald. He scored eight of his 21 points late in the second half, helping the Cadets get to overtime where they beat Farmington 62-56. St. Thomas Academy outscored the Tigers 11-5 in the extra session. ... Junior forward Tom Bloomquist came off the bench to score 13 points and lead Eagan past host Hastings in the semifinals. ... In the consolation semifinals, senior Kendrick Mills hit a halfcourt shot at the buzzer, giving Columbia Heights a 55-52 victory over St. Paul Highland Park.

• TARTAN TOURNAMENT: Marc Sonnen knows how to deliver in the clutch. The senior guard scored 28 points, leading Tartan past Prior Lake 47-41 in the finals. ... Sophomore forward Ben Erickson made a three-pointer with 1.4 seconds remaining, giving Elk River a 71-68 victory over Centennial in the fifth-place game.

Stars win Simley tourney title

• SIMLEY TOURNAMENT: Kelly Kennedy had a three-point play and Molly O'Halloran made two free throws late in the second overtime, rallying Holy Angels past host Simley 73-72 in the championship. The Stars' Laura Margarit led all scorers with 22 points. Simley, which had four starters foul out in regulation play, tied it at the end of regulation and the first overtime. The Spartans' Brittany Willaert made two free throws with 13 seconds left in regulation and Jenn Delong made a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining in the first overtime.

• ALEXANDRIA TOURNAMENT: Armstrong limited high-scoring Alexandria junior Angela Christianson to six points in the second half, pulling away from the host Cardinals for a 68-42 victory in the championship. Alyssa Marschner had 17 points to pace three Falcons in double figures. Christianson finished with 19 points. The Cardinals scored only 17 points in the second half.

• APPLE VALLEY TOURNAMENT: Kendra Harris hit a 10-footer with 1.6 seconds left off of an inbounds play under the basket, giving Cretin-Derham Hall a 57-56 victory over Edina in the third-place game.

Pioneers' Kohls scores four goals

• SCHWAN CUP: Senior forward Isaac Kohls wasn't going to let Class 2A, No. 1 Hill-Murray fret about its first loss of the season very long. Kohls scored four first-period goals, and the Pioneers bounced back from a loss to Minnetonka with a 7-0 victory over Moorhead in the consolation semifinals of the gold division. ... Senior forward Zach Heacox had a hat trick, leading Stillwater past Farmington 7-1 in the consolation semifinals of the bronze division.

Mounds View shuts out Polars

• CENTENNIAL TOURNAMENT: In the semifinals, Torrey Puncochar scored 56 seconds into the third period, breaking a scoreless tie as Mounds View shut out North St. Paul 2-0. Teammate Natalie Stoltz added an insurance goal four minutes later. ... Centennial advanced to the championship after beating White Bear Lake in a shootout. White Bear Lake scored two power-play goals in the final three minutes of regulation to tie it 3-3. Alison Lindy had two goals and one assist for Centennial. ... In the consolation semifinals, Samantha Lorr scored her second goal with Chisago Lakes shorthanded 3 minutes, 26 seconds into overtime, giving the Wildcats a 4-3 victory over Moorhead. She also assisted on Chisago Lakes' tying goal late in the third period.

• LOUIE SCHMITZ CLASSIC: Junior Steph Hatcher scored the lone goal unassisted in the second period, giving Lakeville North a 1-0 victory over Hastings in the semifinals. Senior netminder Solange Miller made 24 saves in recording the shutout. ... Sophomore forward Krystal Baumann had a hat trick and one assist, lifting host Farmington over Chippewa Falls (Wis.) 6-2.
