Washburn football coach leaving for Gustavus

Last update: December 10, 2008 - 1:59 PM

The head football coach at Minneapolis Washburn High School, who has led the Millers to 11 league titles in 15 seasons, was named today to head the football program at Division III Gustavus Adolphus College.

Peter Haugen, 39, a native of Minneapolis and a 1991 graduate of Bethel University, succeeds Jay Schoenebeck, who resigned after 15 years.

"My wife, Brenda, and I are excited to begin serving Gustavus Adolphus College, and we feel blessed to be a part of its incredibly rich academic and athletic heritage," said Haugen, who assumes his duties at the private school in St. Peter, Minn., starting in January.

At Washburn, Haugen compiled an overall record of 111-44, posted a Minneapolis Football Conference record of 76-8. He directed the Millers to the Class AAAA quarterfinals in 2007, finishing 9-3.

Haugen increased player participation from 35 players in 1994 to 110. He also implemented academic monitoring and meal programs for student-athletes as well as creating and directing the highly successful Washburn Athletic Leadership Academy.

At Bethel, Haugen was a starting tight end on the football team, a starting goaltender on the hockey team, and a starting catcher on the baseball team in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Haugen becomes the 17th head coach in the 93-year history of Gustavus football. The Golden Gusties' tradition includes 22 MIAC titles.

The Golden Gusties finished Schoenebeck's final season at 6-4. He compiled a career record of 74-76 overall and 63-65 in the conference.
