Mound-Westonka, hockey
Say this for the versatile sophomore: Her play speaks far more about her abilities than she does.
Kuehl scored 10 goals and had an assist in two games. She scored six goals in an 8-2 victory over Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato and had four goals and an assist in a 7-1 rout of Holy Family/Waconia. She leads the state in goals scored with 17 through five games.
Despite her prolific scoring output, however, Kuehl was not ready to pat herself on the back.
"I'm just going out there, trying to do my best," she said. "Ten goals is a lot, but there were times when we were leading and I wasn't even trying to score. I didn't expect some of those shots to go in."
Glencoe-Silver Lake, football
The sophomore QB led one of the state's top programs to its third consecutive Class 3A championship. He rushed for 135 yards and two TDs and passed for 95 yards in a 42-21 victory over DeLaSalle in the Prep Bowl.
Champlin Park, basketball
The senior guard led the Rebels to the championship of the Red Wing Tip-Off tournament. She had 18 points and five assists in a victory over River Falls (Wis.) and had 20 points and five assists in beating Red Wing. Combined, she went 8-for-11 on three-pointers.
Woodbury, hockey
The Royals lost 12 players to graduation, but Pittman, a senior captain, handled his leadership role nicely in helping them to the championship of the Woodbury tournament. In two games, Pittman scored two goals and assisted on five others.
Visitation/SPA, hockey
The freshman forward scored both game-winning goals in two victories over the weekend. Her breakaway goal in the third period brought a 2-1 victory over Mahtomedi on Friday. On Saturday, she scored the first and third goals in a 3-0 victory over South St. Paul.
Wayzata, football
The senior wide receiver showed his versatility in the Trojans' 27-7 victory over Blaine in the Class 5A championship game Friday. He caught six passes for 48 yards and a TD, rushed for 17 yards and threw a 14-yard TD pass.
Centennial,
basketball
The 6-1 senior center was chosen the Outstanding Player of the East bracket at the Hamline Pat Paterson Invitational. She scored 37 points, grabbed 22 rebounds and had six assists in victories over St. Paul Highland Park and St. Paul Central.
St. Paul Academy, hockey
It didn't take long for Wenzel, a junior winger, to become the leading goal scorer in the metro. In the Spartans' 6-2 victory over Waconia in the first round of the Spartan Cup, Wenzel scored four goals, three of them unassisted.
