Roster narrowed it down, but ...

Last update: November 29, 2008 - 10:09 PM

Wayzata had 127 players in uniform for Friday night's Class 5A Prep Bowl. Seeing more than 99 players on one roster is a numerical nightmare that scares the pants off those of us in the newspaper business. And in Saturday's sports section, we got caught with our pants down.

After Wayzata defeated Blaine, I finished my work in the Metrodome press box and walked a block to the Star Tribune. I looked at a copy of our early edition and noticed a mistake. We had a photograph identifying a Wayzata player as Jameson Macgregor.

Jameson, a 5-11 sophomore, wears No. 84. But so does 6-3 senior Cecil Doe. The guy in the photo (at far right) was Doe, and we fixed the mistake before the first metro edition went to press.

Problem solved? Um, not so fast.

Did your paper have a player lifting a trophy on the front page of Saturday's sports section? That photo went to some parts of the metro area, and that was not Wayzata's Scott Siegel holding up the state championship trophy. Scott is a sophomore who wears No. 66, which ... here we go again ... is the same number worn by senior Rob Bathe. That was Rob in the photograph. Scott Siegel's father phoned the Star Tribune to tell us about the error. Thanks, Dad.

Football is a no-cut sport at Wayzata, which is why Friday's roster included 43 seniors, 54 juniors and 30 sophomores. Which is why there were two No. 3s, two No. 4s, two No. 5s, two No. 7s, two No. 9s, etc. Which is why we're sorry we messed up.
