Rosemount's Vogler makes smooth switch to quarterback

Last update: November 18, 2008 - 7:46 PM

Chase Vogler was accustomed to being a part of every aspect of the game for Rosemount's football team as junior. He was a wide receiver, a defensive back and even played special teams.

Following that season, Irish coach Jeff Erdmann met with his all-purpose athlete during the winter months. A change was in store. Erdmann wanted Vogler to make the switch to quarterback.

In his new position, Vogler guided the Irish (11-2) to their first Lake Conference championship. They shared the title with Eden Prairie.

Vogler talked to the Star Tribune's Ron Haggstrom about his season and career at Rosemount.

Q Let's go back to last winter. What was going through your mind about making the switch to quarterback?

A I was used to being a part of every team. But I couldn't go wrong with having the ball in my hands every play.

Q Talk about Rosemount's magical regular season, a Lake Conference championship?

A We knew we had talent coming into the season. What we accomplished is awesome, a Lake Conference and section championship.

Q The Irish rolled though the section playoffs, outscoring their opponents 94-17. Then came a 12-0 shutout over Mounds View in the Class 5A state quarterfinals, but you suffered a broken left hand. What happened?

A I don't know when the injury actually happened except that it was some time in the second quarter. My hands were cold and the adrenaline was flowing .

Q With the victory, Rosemount advanced to the semifinals against Wayzata. How healthy were you in that game?

A I felt good. I played like I normally did at 100 percent. The only thing I couldn't do was hold the ball in my left hand.

Q What did you wear to protect your left hand?

A I had a molded cast on it with some foam over it. Then it was covered with Pre-wrap.

Q Talk about that game a little bit, a 34-10 victory by Wayzata?

A I didn't think we played that bad. Wayzata was by far the best team we have played this year.

Q It held you to one late touchdown. How good is its defense?

A Their defense is phenomenal. They are super fast.

Q The offensive line that was in front of you had an excellent season. What do you want to say about them?

A I enjoyed playing behind them. They really save me a lot of times. There is no way we win 11 games without them.

Q You have to pick up 1 yard on a running play. Which linemen are you going behind?

A I don't prefer one over another. I feel comfortable going behind any of them.

Q Sum up your final season at Rosemount?

A Words can't describe it. Winning the conference, the section and playing in the dome was great. It was an awesome ride.
