2A: Caledonia 21, Norwood-Young America 0

Caledonia's Ryan Goetzinger did plenty in several categories, but his play at linebacker made the biggest difference.

Last update: November 7, 2008 - 11:09 PM

Ryan Goetzinger added a great deal to Caledonia's offense and special teams, running for a short touchdown, kicking three extra points and punting.

His biggest contributions came on defense. The senior linebacker called the plays and made several tackles as the defending Class 2A champion Warriors shut out Norwood Young America 21-0 in Friday's Class 2A state tournament quarterfinal game at Lakeville North High School.

"It's hard to shut a team out, so that was definitely the best part," he said. "We watched a lot of film on them, and we felt like we knew what they would try to do."

Caledonia (11-1) advances to play Moose Lake/Willow River (12-0) at 5:45 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Metrodome.

Last season, Goetzinger's 30-yard field goal provided the final points in Caledonia's 16-13 victory against Norwood Young America. Led by their defense, the Warriors broke open Friday's rematch with a 14-point third quarter.

Norwood Young America punted to end its first possession after halftime, and Caledonia's ensuing drive ended with Goetzinger's 1-yard touchdown run. The Raiders' next drive ended fast, as Adam Esselman's pass was intercepted by Phil Schulze. The turnover led to Alex Schleich's second touchdown run of the game.

One week after torching Zumbrota-Mazeppa for several long pass plays, Caledonia called on Schleich and the running game Friday. He ran 22 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Casey Bauer attempted only three passes without a completion.

"Our game plan all week was to run the ball, and the offensive line really got it done," Schleich said.
