High school football roundup: Mounds View ends Roseville's improbable run

Last update: November 1, 2008 - 12:47 AM

CLASS 5A

SECTION 2

MOUNDS VIEW 15, ROSEVILLE 8: The seventh-seeded Raiders upset two higher-seeded teams to reach the section title game -- in large part thanks to senior running back Tony Kablan, who carried 65 times for 535 yards and five touchdowns in the two victories. The Cinderella story ended in Mounds View, however, as the Mustangs defense held Kablan to just 53 yards on 21 carries. Mounds View senior Karl Eicher scored both touchdowns for the Mustangs, including a 13-yard run that finished off a 64-yard drive and gave Mounds View the lead with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. Roseville had one last chance for yet another upset, but Eric McKay intercepted a Raiders pass deep in Mounds View territory with a minute left to seal the victory.

CLASS 4A

SECTION 1

NORTHFIELD 22, WINONA 19: Senior Ralph Clark caught a fourth-down desperation pass from Sam Maus with six seconds left in the game, lifting the Raiders over the Winhawks. The heave was tipped in the air by the intended receiver before settling into Clark's arms. The pass was the culmination of a drive that started with 58 seconds to go and also capped a huge comeback for Northfield, as the Raiders trailed 19-3 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

SECTION 2

MANKATO WEST 28, HUTCHINSON 13: Senior running back Paul Berndt carried 17 times for 126 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Scarlets. Fellow senior Ray Teachout completed 15 of 18 passes, including a 28-yard touchdown pass.

SECTION 4

MAHTOMEDI 36, CHISAGO LAKES 7: The Zephyrs may have had to forfeit five wins during the regular season, but in the playoffs, they were still the team to beat in Section 4. Senior running back Steve Johnson rushed for 174 yards and three scores to lead Mahtomedi.

CLASS 3A

SECTION 2

LE SUEUR-HENDERSON 3, BELLE PLAINE 0: Senior Erik Esteban kicked a 27-yard field goal with 6:13 to play in the fourth quarter, lifting the Giants over the Tigers. LSH held Belle Plaine to only 96 total yards.

SECTION 3

GLENCOE-SILVER LAKE 30, LITCHFIELD 7: For the seventh consecutive year, the Panthers are going to the state tournament. Litchfield opened the game with a nine-minute touchdown drive, capped by a 1-yard run from senior Nic Johnson, but thereafter it was all Glencoe-Silver Lake. Panthers QB Kyler Anderson rushed for 169 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown.
