Lester Prairie 27, Providence Acad./Heritage Acad: 21: Fourth-quarter surge is difference

Last update: October 11, 2008 - 8:51 AM

For three quarters, things were progressing nicely for Providence Academy/Heritage Academy. As has been their modus operandi all season, the Lions were running the ball effectively and had built an eight-point lead over host Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity.

The inaugural MCAA championship, which would go to the winner, was in sight, as was the most significant victory in the six-year history of the program.

And then the fourth quarter happened.

Lester Prairie pulled to within a point on an 18-yard run by Scott Thiemann. The Bulldogs then shocked the Lions when, with 2:30 left in the game, defensive end Max Pichotta intercepted a swing pass on Providence's next drive and returned it 61 yards for the winning touchdown in Lester Prairie's 27-21 victory.

Until then, Providence had been the better team. The Lions dominated at the line of scrimmage, amassing 479 total yards. Running backs Caleb Scherer and Kaleb Williams combined for 310 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Turnovers doomed the Lions. They lost three fumbles and had a pass intercepted, keeping Lester Prairie within striking distance.
