Prep football roundup: Southwest QB throws record 8 TDs

MINNEAPOLIS

• SOUTHWEST 53, SOUTH 6: Elliott Mathieu is in a class of his own. The senior quarterback threw a state-record eight touchdown passes, leading the Lakers past South on Friday. Six players shared the previous record of seven, including Joe Mauer of Cretin-Derham Hall against Eagan in 2000. Sean Borman of Hopkins threw seven touchdown passes in a 56-42 victory over Edina earlier this season. Mathieu completed 26 of 41 passes for 452 yards. He has thrown 30 touchdown passes this season, 25 short of the state record of 55 set by Breck's Liam O'Hagan in 2003. Junior Danny Kernan was on the receiving end of three of the scoring plays.

• HENRY 37, EDISON 0: Dianta Halbert caught only three passes from quarterback Joel Prichard, but they all went for touchdowns as the Patriots shut out the Tommies. Halbert was on the receiving end of 60-, 81- and 28-yard scoring plays.

• WASHBURN 41, NORTH 0: The Millers scored their first three touchdowns in a span of 4 minutes, 9 seconds in the first quarter of a rout against the Polars. Brandon King passed for three touchdowns and ran for one for Washburn.

CLASSIC SUBURBAN

• ST. THOMAS ACADEMY 50, NORTH ST. PAUL 7: The big blue machine keeps on rolling. The Cadets scored 50 points for the second consecutive week in beating North St. Paul and have scored at least 47 the past four weeks. Fullback Danny Traeger ran for 142 yards on 14 carries and two scores and also caught a touchdown pass.

MISSOTA

• HUTCHINSON 34, SHAKOPEE 7: Junior fullback Jacob Brusehaver ran for three touchdowns, lifting the Tigers over the Sabers. Hutchinson stretched its streak of nonlosing seasons to 37 years.

NORTH SUBURBAN

• IRONDALE 53, ST. FRANCIS 7: Chi Chi Ojika ran for four scores and caught a touchdown pass as the Knights scored all of their points in the first half of their victory over the Saints.

ST. PAUL CITY

• CENTRAL 39, HUMBOLDT 0: The Minutemen forced eight turnovers and returned two interceptions for touchdowns in shutting out the Hawks. Senior Dominic Jones and sophomore Cameron Vanderwall returned second-half interceptions 40 and 34 yards for touchdowns, respectively. Central led 6-0 at halftime before scoring four touchdowns in the third quarter.

SUBURBAN EAST

• CRETIN-DERHAM HALL 62, PARK 46: The Raiders outlasted Park in a matchup that featured 1,141 yards of total offense. Cretin-Derham Hall quarterback Mark Alt passed for 329 yards and three scores and ran for two touchdowns.

• ROSEVILLE 14, HASTINGS 0: Senior Tony Kablan scored both touchdowns on short runs as Roseville shut out Hastings. Roseville junior linebacker Aaron Anderson-Walker had two interceptions in the red zone.

WRIGHT COUNTY

• DELANO 14, DASSEL-COKATO 10: Senior halfback Jake Gleason broke loose for a 33-yard touchdown run with 2 minutes, 8 seconds remaining as the Tigers beat the Chargers.

• WACONIA 41, MOUND-WESTONKA 7: Senior Chris Leivermann scores touchdowns and helps prevent them. Leivermann ran for four touchdowns, scoring on runs on 4, 18, 9 and 9 yards, and he also had two interceptions on defense for the Wildcats.
