A 51-yard touchdown pass broke St. Michael-Albertville out of a funk and on to victory.
The 51-yard touchdown pass St. Michael-Albertville used to break out of its offensive funk was the product of a simple adjustment.
Forget the three-step drop, quarterback Jason Dehmer was told. Take one step and throw.
Dehmer hit wide receiver Jordan Scherber in stride 5 yards downfield, and Scherber ran to the end zone -- the key play in St. Michael-Albertville's 29-12 victory at Benilde-St. Margaret's.
The touchdown provided the Knights their first offensive points of the game and signaled a recovery from the three previous drives that ended with fumbles lost.
Each fumble hurt more than one before. The first negated good field position. The second led to Benilde-St. Margaret's first score. The third ruined a 12-play drive and threatened the unit's confidence.
"We knew we had to execute and stop hurting ourselves," said Dehmer, who lost the third fumble.
Then Benilde-St. Margaret's began making mistakes. After recovering Dehmer's fumble, the Red Knights (5-2) went four plays and out. A punt attempt from their own 9-yard line failed when the snap went out of the end zone.
The Knights (5-2) got two points and the ball. Then Dehmer connected with Scherber on the first play from scrimmage.
The Knights needed Dehmer's legs on their next scoring drive. He scored on an 11-yard rush.
Benilde-St. Margaret's found moving the ball to be a chore most of the night. The Knights defense allowed only 81 first-half yards and one touchdown. Benilde-St. Margaret's 93-yard scoring drive in the third quarter nearly doubled its total yardage output.
"Our defense kept us in the game," Dehmer said.
