Southwest QB knows hurricanes

Last update: September 4, 2008 - 8:55 PM

Minneapolis Southwest quarterback Elliot Mathieu kept a close eye on Hurricane Gustav earlier this week because he knows what it's like when a super storm strikes New Orleans. That's where Mathieu lived until Hurricane Katrina struck three years ago.

As Katrina was bearing down on the city, Mathieu's family members and other relatives packed into a vehicle and drove to Houston. "It took a long time, like a 12-hour ride," he said, "with nine or 10 of us stuck in a van."

His family remained in Houston for two months before moving to Minneapolis, where Mathieu's grandmother lived. This is his third year at Southwest; he will graduate next spring.

"It's beautiful here," he said. "It's better than being in New Orleans."
