Minnetonka vs. Wayzata tonight

Last update: September 5, 2008 - 8:06 AM

Since the first game resulted in a 13-13 tie in 1952, Minnetonka vs. Wayzata has been an anticipated high school football matchup in the area. That only intensified in recent years between the two large schools, with both winning Class 5A state championships: the Skippers in 2004 (over Wayzata) and the Trojans one year later (over Cretin-Derham Hall).

Tonight, the two teams meet again at Minnetonka. And for the fourth time the victor will receive the Bay Bell Trophy, named for Grays Bay and Wayzata Bay in Lake Minnetonka, which separate the two school districts. Wayzata has won the past three meetings and thus never has relinquished possession of the Bay Bell. The Skippers would like the chance to have it on display at their school.

"The trophy signifies winning, and a leg up in the [Classic Lake Conference] standings," Minnetonka AD John Hedstrom said. "We would like to take it over."

Tickets for tonight's game -- and all Minnetonka home games -- are available at the school and at the Cub Foods at Hwys. 101 and 7 near the school. Hedstrom advises fans to carpool and show up early.
