reflections BY JOHN MILLEA

THE STAT

Mankato East junior Kenneth King carried 35 times for 301 yards and two TDs in a 28-14 victory at Detroit Lakes. That sets a nice tone for Week 2, when the Cougars meet Mankato West in one of the state's best rivalries.

THE SURPRISE

Who expected Woodbury to defeat Mounds View? Behind Cretin-Derham Hall, Mounds View is usually a team to be reckoned with in the Suburban East. Woodbury might be ready to join that list.

THE QUOTE

Hopkins' spread offense ran wild in a 48-30 victory over Owatonna, which employs an old-school, no-frills Wing-T offense. As Owatonna coach Jeff Williams said, "We've gotta be Frazier. We can't be Ali."

THE NEXT ROUND

Wayzata goes to Minnetonka in the biggest metro game of Week 2. In the Northwest Suburban, Anoka and Coon Rapids will face off to see who starts 2-0. In Nine-Man, Stephen-Argyle will try to extend its state-record winning streak to 69 at Climax-Fisher.
