At its core, the True Team track and field state meet is exactly what the name implies: A meet that rewards depth and effort to recognize the best overall teams. Yet it's still a track and field meet, and stars still are allowed to shine. Someone still has to win the events, right?

Enter Wayzata senior Michael Smith. Considered one of the state's most versatile sprinters, he finished fourth in the 100-meter dash and then won the 200 and 400 meters. His three finishes alone accounted for 78 team points for the Trojans, who went on to win the Class 3A team championship at Friday's meet with 946.5 points.

Smith could have totaled even more points had coach Aaron Berndt opted to run him in the sprint relays. Smith, who has the fastest 400-meter time in the state this spring (48.18), was a member of Wayzata's 2013 Class 2A champion 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Not surprisingly, Wayzata has the state's fastest 4x400-meter time this year and the second-fastest 4x200.

Another Lake Conference school, Minnetonka, has one of the state's strongest girls' teams. The Skippers scored 701 points in the Class 3A True Team meet, good for fourth behind Lakeville South, Prior Lake and Mounds View. However, Minnetonka's prom was also held Friday and many of the Skippers' top competitors, including senior jumpers Mia Barron and Piper Jensen and middle-distance runner Elizabeth Endy, did not participate in the True Team meet. Expect a full-strength Minnetonka team to put up a strong defense of its 2013 Class 2A meet title in June.

Wayzata shoots for eight in a row

The synchronized swimming state meet takes place Thursday and Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Wayzata, the reigning champ, brings an 11-0 record to the meet and will be shooting for its eight consecutive title. The result might not be quite as certain as in years past, however. While the Trojans still are favored, they have had a couple of close calls this season, barely getting past Edina (26-23) and St. Louis Park (26-20), in regular- season meets.

Worth noting

The Waconia baseball team has clinched at least a share of the Wright County Conference East Division championship. The Wildcats (14-2, 11-1 in conference) had a six-game winning streak stopped Saturday in an 8-7 loss to New Prague. They rallied from a four-run deficit to take a 7-6 lead, only to lose when New Prague scored in the bottom of the sixth inning. Waconia faced second-place Hutchinson on Tuesday with the outright conference title on the line.
