Division I sports lie ahead for 27 south-metro athletes

The south metro continues its trend of producing plenty of Division I athletes.

At least 27 athletes signed letters of intent during the early signing period last Wednesday. They were:

Apple Valley: Seth Gross, University of Iowa wrestling.

Burnsville: Georgi Donchetz , Valparaiso (Ind.) University women’s basketball; Vivian Hett, Northern Michigan University’s women’s nordic skiing; Emma Wittchow, Minnesota State University Mankato women’s hockey

Eagan: Taylr McNeil, University of South Carolina volleyball; Becca Schugel, University of Missouri women’s gymnastics.

Jordan: Madison Dean, Drake (Iowa) University women’s basketball.

Lakeville North: J.P. Macura, Xavier (Ohio) University men’s basketball; Erika Rozell, University of Minnesota softball.

Lakeville South: Mitch Herrera, Columbia (N.Y.) University men’s swimming; Katie Quandt, Boston College women’s basketball; Kylie Stober, University of Minnesota softball.

New Prague: Paul Friendshuh, Richmond (Va.) University men’s basketball; and Kenzie Neisen, Oklahoma State University women’s golf.

Northfield: Anna Pfefferle, University of Colorado volleyball.

Prior Lake: Lexi Brandt, University of Notre Dame women’s rowing; Kendra Lair, University of Nebraska-Omaha women’s swimming; Kara Lattery, South Dakota State University softball; Lauren Miller, Wofford (S.C.) College volleyball; Austin Polson-McCannon, University of Detroit Mercy men’s lacrosse; Kenzie Sexe, University of Kansas women’s golf; Jon Sobaski, North Dakota State University men’s basketball.

Rosemount: Hannah Grim, Marquette (Wis.) University women’s basketball; Sawyer Murray, University of North Dakota women’s swimming; Carter and Connor Yepsen, Robert Morris (Pa.) University men’s lacrosse.

Simley: Kyle Brown, Creighton (Neb.) University women’s basketball.

Top performances

• Senior Brayan Estrada Martinez scored four goals, leading Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville to an 8-1 victory over Park Center in the finals of the CI adapted soccer state tournament on Saturday at Stillwater High School. Estrada Martinez scored 11 goals in three tournament games.

• Eastview junior forward Erica Geary scored two goals and had two assists in a 5-4 victory over Hastings in nonconference girls’ hockey action last Tuesday. She leads the Lightning with four goals and three assists on the season.
