Chaska's Hand is tops in baseball

Brad Hand, a 6-3 lefthanded pitcher from Chaska, recently was selected the Gatorade Minnesota Baseball Player of the Year. Hand has been a dominant force on the mound, going 5-1 with a 0.55 ERA. He also has stood out at the plate, hitting .344 with six home runs this season.

Breck, Eastview name hockey coaches

• Les Larson is the new boys' hockey coach at Breck, athletic director Brett Bergene announced this week. Larson, a Notre Dame graduate, has more than 25 years of coaching experience.

• Eastview has made Drey Bradley its permanent boys' hockey coach. Bradley, who was an All-America hockey player at Bemidji State in 1983 and '84, was an assistant at Eastview for five years before taking over as interim co-head coach before last season.

St. Michael-Albertville wrestling coach retires

Greg Greeno, who led St. Michael-Albertville to six state team wrestling championships during a 28-year career as coach, has announced his retirement.

Greeno's record of 537-95-2 includes 20 dual-meet titles in the Wright County, Rum River and Mississippi 8 conferences, 15 region/section titles, 86 individual state placewinners and 21 individual state champions. He was named Minnesota coach of the year in 1996 and 2004, served one term as president of the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association and was inducted into the MWCA Dave Bartelma Hall of Fame in 2002. Dan Lefebvre will replace him.

Adapted softball today

The state adapted softball tournament is today and Saturday at Coon Rapids High School. Osseo (12-3), the defending champion in the CI Division, is seeded No. 2 in the North Division this year.

Robbinsdale/Hopkins/Mound-Westonka is the defending champion in the PI Division and enters the tournament undefeated and seeded No. 1 in the North Division.

Quarterfinals in both divisions start at 4 p.m. today; the championship game in PI starts at 1:45 p.m. Saturday. The CI title game follows at 3:15 p.m.

• Sophie Harris and Ari Resnick were named winners of the Mercury Club's Hy Truman/Donald Goldberg Memorial Award, giving to the top high school senior Jewish female and male scholar-athletes in the metro area. Harris was a three-sport athlete at Breck; Resnick participated in Nordic skiing and baseball at Minneapolis Southwest.
