Last update: May 13, 2008 - 8:23 AM

BASEBALL

Southwest wins city title

• MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST 10, MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH 0 (6 innings): The Lakers clinched the Minneapolis Conference title outright with a convincing victory. Senior pitcher John Licht improved his record to 4-0, giving up two hits and striking out nine. Licht helped himself at the plate by going 2-for-3 while teammate Richie Roth doubled and drove in four runs. Southwest is undefeated (16-0) on the season.

• TOTINO-GRACE 9, COOPER 8: Jake King's two-out single drove in the winning run to cap a four-run Eagles rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.

• CRETIN-DERHAM HALL 3, MOUNDS VIEW 1 (8 innings): David Bettenburg played the role of hero, hitting a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to vault the Raiders into sole possession of first place in the Suburban East. Nate Swanson pitched seven innings and gave up four hits to earn the victory.

• WAYZATA 7, MINNETONKA 5 (9 innings): Logan Brau hit a two-run, walk-off homer in the ninth inning for the Trojans. Minnetonka had rallied to tie the score with three runs in the top of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

SOFTBALL

Wolfpack hammers its way to Suburban East championship

• PARK OF COTTAGE GROVE 14, HASTINGS 13: The Wolfpack scored 14 runs -- and needing every one of them -- to clinch the Suburban East Conference championship. Park broke a 9-9 tie in the top of the seventh inning on a three-run triple by Kelsey Waltz and a two-run homer by Ashley Kluever, then held on as Hastings made things tight by scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

• NORTH ST. PAUL 5, MAHTOMEDI 0: The Polars scored three runs in the first inning and cruised to victory behind the three-hit pitching of Brittany Kretsch. Sophomore first baseman Amanda Skelly celebrated her 16th birthday by going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.

• HILL-MURRAY 3, TARTAN 0: Eighth-grader Teona Zepeda pitched a three-hitter and senior Lisa Grundtner went 3-for-3 and scored a run for the Pioneers.

• PARK CENTER 7, ELK RIVER 2: Ashley Brown has seen little playing time this season, so the senior second baseman was not about to waste an opportunity. Brown came off the bench and went 2-for-3, scored a run and drove in a run for the Pirates.

• HOPKINS 4, MINNETONKA 1 (9 innings): Jenna Peterson pitched a two-hitter and drove what proved to be the winning run with a single in the top of the ninth.

LACROSSE • GIRLS
