Area teams dominate top seeds in lacrosse

Last update: May 13, 2008 - 5:31 PM

Early indications are it will be in the upper 60s and sunny the rest of the week. Perfect for catching some outdoor prep sports. And in the south metro, boys' Section 3 lacrosse will be prominent.

The top eight seeds in the tournament are from the area. No. 1 Eastview leads the pack, followed in order by Eagan, Apple Valley, Lakeville South, Prior Lake, Rosemount, Burnsville and Simley.

Quarterfinals were Tuesday night. Check out www.startribune.com/preps for results and pairings for today's semifinal matchups. The Section 3 championship is Friday.

Also this week:

• The state badminton team tournament is taking place at Burnsville High School. The team finals are \ at 4 p.m. today. The individual tournament begins Thursday and wraps up Friday at St. Paul Harding High School.

• The Class 3A True Team state track and field meet is set for 4 p.m. Friday at Stillwater High School. Lakeville North, Eagan and Eastview will be competing on the girls' side. In the boys' meet, Eagan will be in competition. In Class 2A, both the boys' and girls teams from New Prague advanced. That meet is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Saturday, also at Stillwater.

• Shakopee's baseball team plays host to Prior Lake at 7 p.m. Thursday. Sabers' senior righthander Chase Hentges has been gaining attention lately, with his fastball clocked at 93 miles per hour. Up to 30 scouts were reported at a recent game.

Apple Valley names new head coaches

A pair of fall varsity sports coaching moves have been announced at Apple Valley. Dan Kuklock will replace Dan Seppala at the head of the Eagles' volleyball team. In girls' cross country, Andrea Gelle will replace Heather Fitzloff. Also announced, Tasia Harrens will take over for Tina Timm as head competition cheerleading coach.

Skate-a-thon in Shakopee

Shakopee's hockey association is holding a skate-a-thon Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in an effort to raise money for a second sheet of ice. All ages of skaters are invited to join. Activities planned include a raffle, silent auction, games and activities outside the arena and a chance at participating in shoot-outs with the Minnesota State, Mankato men's hockey team.
