The Hamline Elite Meet, a track-and-field event designed to bring the state's best talent to an early-season stage, yielded plenty of positive results for west-metro athletes last Friday night. If this is any indication, the area is in for quite the showing in June on the same turf.
Among the girls' winners:
Holy Angels' Chelsea Pettit in the 1,600-meter run (5 minutes, 24.8 seconds); Bloomington Kennedy's Danielle Berndt in the 3,200 (11:16.18); Hopkins in both the 4x200 (1:44.63) and 4x400 (4:08.87) realys; and Wayzata's Jordan Helgren in the triple jump (37-11.75 feet).
For the boys:
Zach Mellon of Buffalo won the 800 (1:56.90); Hopkins' Greg Kufall won the 300 hurdles (39.51); Derek Jerde of Chaska won the high jump (6-07), and Austin Delaney of St. Louis Park won the triple jump (45-08).
Tennis prowessFor a dose of some top-notch tennis talent this weekend, Edina Community Center is the place to be.
Including the top-ranked Hornets, five of the state's top 10 teams will be competing in the annual John Rowe Invitational.
Mounds View (No. 2), Rochester Mayo (3), Henry Sibley (4) and Wayzata (7) are also in the eight-team field.
Mowin' 'em downHeading into this week, Chaska pitchers Brad Hand and John Straka have combined for 65 strikeouts. The Hawks take on Eden Prairie at 4:30 p.m. today at home in a Lake Conference matchup. Chaska won the season's first meeting 5-0. Hand fanned 13 Eagles batters in that game.
