Since 1948, Anoka's final regular-season home game at Goodrich Field has been called the Pumpkin Bowl. A traveling trophy was created in 1950, and it contains the scores of all 64 games played to date.

The 60th game takes place at 7 p.m. Friday against Champlin Park (4-2). The Tornadoes (3-3) are 2-1 in Pumpkin Bowl games against the Rebels, including a 46-24 thrashing last season.

The game was started to create additional pageantry for the "Halloween Capital of the World."

Opposing teams were invited by Anoka until the early 1970s, when the Minnesota State High School League introduced playoffs. Since then, the game has been part of the regular-season schedule.

Soccer playoffs set

Several strong north metro boys' and girls' soccer teams started the section playoffs this week -- some of them playing on Tuesday after this edition of the Star Tribune went to press.

On the boys' side, No. 2 Champlin Park is undefeated (13-0-1) and the top seed in Section 5. No. 8 Blaine is the top seed in Section 7, the same section where No. 9 Mounds View earned the third seed.

On the girls' side, No. 2 Maple Grove and No. 4 Centennial are the top two seeds in Class 2A Section 5 and are on a collision course for a section championship showdown. Andover, a former top-10 team, is the top seed in Section 7.

Totino-Grace, No. 4 in Class 1A, is the top seed in Section 5.

Mounds View honors hall of fame class

Mounds View High School inducted 10 former athletes into its hall of fame on Oct 5: Matt Anderle (Class of 1997), Doug Conboy ('69), Anne Hill Peramaki ('84), Nick Horvath ('99), Lindsey (Ogren) Vaughn ('99), Joe Palke ('98) and four members of the Riter family: Dick ('61), Tony ('93), Sarah ('95) and Trent (2001).
