Perennial badminton power St. Paul Harding has won the past two state tournaments, finishing both seasons undefeated. But St. Paul Johnson (3-0) already has served notice that this year will be different, by ending the Knights' 40-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory last Thursday on the Governors' home floor.
"Harding has been so dominant the past couple of years that no one was going to touch them," Johnson coach Don Bross said. "They're rebuilding, but they're still the dominant team in badminton. We're having success based on our depth so far this season."
Senior singles players Goly Yang and Belick Pha and the top doubles team of senior Kia Thao and freshman Shoua Vang will lead the charge for the Governors.
"Johnson will be our biggest competition," Knights coach Tracy Hrouda said. "It's one thing to get your team to win, but to maintain it is even more difficult."
Senior Mee Xiong, last year's runner-up to teammate Pang Thao for the state individual championship, will headline the Knights' 2008 lineup.
Eden Prairie, St. Paul Central and Burnsville will also be among the top contenders for the state championship this season. Eden Prairie is led by senior Katie Vohnoutka, a volleyball player who uses her height and strength to dominate opponents. Favorites to win the singles title this season include Harding's Xiong; Eden Prairie's Vohnoutka and Highland Park senior Khoua Xiong.
